 | PowerColor HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 | 2008/6 | AMD has certainly engineered a winner with their Radeon HD 4850 series. This card, positioned in the $199 segment, reaches unprecedented performance levels thanks to its excellent architectural improvements. In most benchmarks it can beat the GeForce 9800 GTX which is almost $70 more expensive. As we expected, AMD's RV770 GPU can not take on the GeForce GTX 280, but sometimes it comes really close. Due to AMD's new AA design, enabling 4x Anti-Aliasing is basically free now, so there is no reason not to use AA. In my opinion the sweet spot for this card is around 1600x1200 4xAA - never before could you run all games with a $199 VGA card at this res.

 | PowerColor HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 | 2008/6 | As far as we can tell, DAAMIT’s done a great job with the RV770 marchitecture (or at least with the HD4850). While the HD3870 and HD3850 felt slightly outgunned by Nvidia’s G92, the RV770 looks like it’s inverted that particular trend.

One of them is DX 10.1 support, the second one is slightly (on average) better performance…. The Radeon HD series 4850 are just stuffed with good features and offers tremendous amount of performance for your bucks.

Ok, so you say it caught up, but didn't take it over - but with a price tag of $199, versus the GTX 280's very high price of $649.99, this is a no-brainier. I mean, you can get three of these cards for the cost of just one GTX 280 and CrossFire them.
